Grocery Story

I think that one way we can further reduce are waste is by reducing the amount of preprocessed food we consume. This type of food comes packaged and bagged to an excessive level. But it is neither healthier or more affordable than fresh food.

It's Thursday and I'm coming from the grocery store where I bought fresh produce that I intend to prepare over the next week.

In addition to the usual choices, I filled my bags with leeks, portobello mushrooms, zucchini and even fresh mint and parsley. There were also mangoes, but I passed then bye since we did not have them on the list.

Thankfully, our local grocery store has long adopted a BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag) policy to encourage the use of reusable bags. It is therefore impossible to find (or pay for) a plastic bag at grocery store and some of the local shops have followed suit. However, you can ask for a cardboard box to carry your purchases in. Another reason to love our community!

As I said in the past the cost of living can be quite high if you let it, but even with the fresh produce we only paid around a hundred dollars. This is for three people, as my son has moved out, and this is a reasonable amount for a family of our size with mostly fresh produce.

My husband and daughter enjoy it too, as they enjoy planning meals together, and my husband cooks with great pleasure when new produce becomes available. Do you have recipes to share? He would love to hear them.
